Cycling the Western Front Way with the Lewis Moody Foundation
This autumn events season, 10 daring rugby fans took on the Western Front Way for The Lewis Moody Foundation. The team cycled the 1000km across France in seven days raising an amazing £54,000! Coinciding with the 2023 Rugby World Cup the cyclists rounded up the challenge with tickets to England vs Samoa in Lille. What an incredible way to celebrate their achievements!
Thank you to The Lewis Moody Foundation for organising this exciting challenge, the sponsors who made the trip happen and of course the riders for all you do for the brian tumour community!
London to Brighton
From the historical trails of France to the iconic annual London to Brighton cycling challenge that took place this autumn events season. 75 cyclists took on this well known ride including Tanguy and his friends and family in what they coined ’55 miles for Max’.
Tanguy’s son Maxence was diagnosed with a brain tumour in June 2020. Max was transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital where he underwent treatment including chemotherapy for the tumour.
Tanguy and his friends wanted to make a difference. So in 2022 they formed their ‘peloton’ and began training for the London to Brighton ride. When the big day came around they loved it so much they immediately signed up again for the 2023 event!
Autumn events 2023- Runs
291 runners took on various marathons and half marathons across Europe this autumn. With a total of 4087.2 miles under their belts, they really did go the extra mile to accelerate a cure for brain tumours this aumn events season. From The Great North Run and the Berlin Marathon in September, to The Manchester Half this October, you battled wind, rain and sunshine with every stride.
The Royal Parks Half Marathon
Ryan O’Shea completed the Royal Parks Half Marathon after he was diagnosed with a brain tumour last year.
Since his diagnosis Ryan has lived by the saying ‘it is what it is’. Knowing doctors have done all they can he lives every day as it comes. And his efforts have not gone unnoticed!
Ryan was named one of The Royal Parks inspire runners for this years event. We couldn’t think of anyone who deserved this more, a truly inspiring reason to run indeed!
The Bath Half Marathon
Fast forward to The Bath Half Marathon and we were joined by the amazing Harry and Sarah!
Sarah used to attend family days with her family when they were younger. As a long term supporter of The Lewis Moody Foundation, the family understand the impact their fundraising has on supporting and improving the lives of families affected by a brain tumour diagnosis.
This October Harry took on the 13.1 miles throughout Bath raising over £20,000! This could fund two years of lab consumables on one of our glioblastoma research projects.
With so many runs taking place it’s no surprise that your fundraising efforts shone through. This autumn you have raised a total of £288,000 through these inspiring running events! Thank you for all you do to improve the lives of those affected by a brain tumour diagnosis.
Autumn events 2023- walks
But these runs and cycles aren’t all that took place this autumn.
45 of you also strode your way towards a cure in these monumental walking challenges!
The annual Edinburgh Kiltwalk and the Thames Bridges Trek took to the capitals of England and Scotland in some surprisingly warm weather. With water and snacks at the ready, you didn’t let that stop you. Powering through you raised am amazing £14,000 which could fund almost three months of online peer support for those affected by a brain tumour diagnosis.
The Chilterns 50 Ultra Challenge
Helen was joined by six of her friends for The Chilterns 50 Ultra Challenge to mark the fourth anniversary of her surgery in 2019.
Diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2017 Helen is grateful that the removal of her tumour was successful. However, side effects like fatigue and brain fog now have a big impact on her daily life.
Thankful for the ongoing support from her friends and family, Helen and her friends celebrated four years of being tumour free with this great challenge, a 50 km hike through the Chilterns.
Starting and finishing at Henley-on-Thames the friends raised an incredible £4,000! This money could fund two months of national online advertising to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of brain tumours. Amazing!
